National Poetry Month Contest: Limerick

Celebrate National Poetry Month with us by entering our limerick poetry contest for a chance to win a prize!  A limerick is a (usually humorous) five line poem with a bouncy and fun rhythm.

  • Adults and teens ages 13 and up can submit entries in person on the 3rd floor or via email to ref@morleylibrary.org
    • Please note  "Limerick Poetry Contest" in the subject line.
  • Only one entry per participant please.
  • Be sure to include your name, age group,  and contact information.
  • Scroll down for tips on writing a limerick 

Early submissions begin: March 25, 2024.

Contest runs from April 1 – April 15, 2024

Entries will be displayed on the 3rd floor.

Voting will take place from April 17- May 1.

Winners will be announced and contacted by May 7.

We can't wait to see and share your creations! 

How to write a limerick:

  • Write five lines
  • The rhyme scheme is aabba.  (Lines 1, 2, and 5 rhyme with each other. Lines 3 and 4 rhyme with each other..)
  • The rhythm is anapestic (two unstressed followed by one stressed syllable)
    • Lines 1,2 and 5 will have three stressed syllables (da dum da da dum da da dum)
    • Lines 3 and 4 will have two stressed syllables (da dum da da dum)
  • Limericks are funny! Have fun!
