Sailing on the Great Lakes: Single Handed to Tall Ships

Sailing on the Great Lakes: Single Handed to Tall Ships In-Person

John Ollila shares his stories, images, and songs about sailing on the Great Lakes alone and as a crew member on various tall ships. Mr. Ollila grew up in Lake County in a family with close connections to Lake Erie and its beaches, swimming, and aquatics. He has sailed on various tall ships and participated in multiple singlehanded sailing events including challenges on all of the Great Lakes and in Canada. For the past 16 years, he has served as a mate with the Maritime Heritage Alliance on the schooner Madeline, a replica of a Great Lakes tall ship originally built in Fairport Harbor in 1845. Find out why and how you can go anywhere in the world from Lake Erie as long as you have a boat that can handle it!
